Colle di Val d'Elsa

Picturesque perched at the top of the hill

Colle di Val d'Elsa is perched in its oldest part on a high hillock. The urban map is divided into Colle Alta and Colle Bassa.
The town is the most important Italian center of crystal production. Every year in September there is the event "Cristallo tra le mura", an exhibition of the crystal of Colle di Val d'Elsa, which reached its 30th edition in 2007.
In order to enhance the nativity as a symbol of peace and brotherhood among peoples, each year the town of Colle di Val d'Elsa organizes an exhibition of cribs connected to the First Crib contest by Arnolfo di Cambio, the distinguished sculptor and architect born in Colle di Val d'Elsa and the first whom executed a carved nativity scene in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.
In Colle di Val d'Elsa, according to tradition, one of the nails of the crucifixion of Christ is preserved. It is conserved in the cathedral of Colle di Val d'Elsa in a tabernacle done by Domenico Rosselli. It has a length of twenty-two centimeters, at one end has the head still well rounded and at the other it is pointed and bent. The sacred relic came to Colle in the ninth century, after being passed by many hands.
